Six broad Solo voice types

Voice type details

  1. Detect. A microphone buffer is analyzed locally with a normalized autocorrelation pitch detector.
  2. Reject. The detector and range session filter low clarity, low energy, implausible pitches, unstable notes, and brief events.
  3. Confirm. A candidate pitch must remain clear and stable for at least 300 ms before it can change an endpoint.
  4. Interpret. Range overlap and center proximity produce a broad alignment estimate; they do not measure timbre, passaggio, vocal weight, or comfortable tessitura.

Countertenor method note

Countertenor is a tenor-area performance practice that can use a different registration strategy. It is explained here as a note about interpretation, not added as a seventh main card.

Safety and accuracy

Microphone quality, room noise, vibrato, vocal fry, register transitions, and device audio processing can affect readings. Sing comfortably, do not force an extreme, and stop if anything hurts.

Four careful steps

  1. Prepare a comfortable voiceUse a quiet room, stand or sit without strain, and sing at an easy volume. Stop if anything feels painful or forced.
  2. Find the low endStart near speaking pitch and move down gradually. Hold each note steadily; the test ignores brief noises and unsteady readings.
  3. Find the high endMove upward in small steps without shouting. Count notes you can sustain clearly, not one-off squeaks or whistle-register effects.
  4. Read the estimateCompare the confirmed range with broad SATB and Solo references, then treat the alignment as a starting hypothesis because tessitura and timbre also matter.

Questions and limitations

Can vocal range alone determine my voice type?

No. Range is useful evidence, but a fuller classification also considers tessitura, timbre, register transitions, vocal weight, training, and repertoire. This tool therefore shows broad range alignment, not a professional diagnosis.

Why does the test ignore very brief notes?

A microphone can mistake breath, room noise, or a harmonic for an extreme pitch. A note must remain clear and stable for at least 300 milliseconds before it changes your result, which favors notes you can actually sustain.

What is the difference between SATB and Solo?

SATB describes four choral parts: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. Solo shows six broad individual voice categories. They overlap, but they answer different practical questions and neither is a diagnosis from two endpoints.

Why is Countertenor not a seventh card?

Countertenor describes a tenor-area performance practice and registration choice that can overlap the chart. It is included as a method note so the six-card comparison stays clear rather than treating it as a separate range-only diagnosis.

Is my microphone audio uploaded?
